1 dead, 35 hurt in crashes
Malda/Islampur, April 15: One person was killed and 35 were injured in two road accidents at Old Malda and Goalpokhar today.
Old Malda police said a woman was killed and 14 others were hurt when the trekker they were travelling in collided with a truck on the Malda-Bulbulchandi highway near Sahapur. The injured persons have been admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital. In North Dinajpur, 21 persons were injured when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a roadside tree on the Islampur-Goalpokhar road at Zeropani. They have been admitted to the Islampur subdivisional hospital.
Homes gutted
Malda: More than 100 houses were gutted in a fire at Charalu village in Chanchal on Sunday. Chanchal subdivisional officer Asok Sarkar said the fire broke out from a haystack in the area. He said the administration had distributed tarpaulin sheets, 12kg rice and dry food to each of the affected families.
Deer calf
Jaigaon: Foresters of Buxa Tiger Reserve rescued a male deer calf from Raimatang tea estate on Sunday. The animal was later released in the Pana range of the forest.
