Party nips VS nuke protest

Thiruvananthapuram, April 11: The CPM has vetoed veteran V.S. Achutanandan’s plans to join the protests against the Kudankulam nuclear plant, apparently under pressure from Tamil Nadu leaders who favour the project.

The former Kerala chief minister had announced after the end of the CPM’s 20th party congress earlier this week that he would meet the people agitating against the plant.

His original plan was to travel to Kudankulam tomorrow. Sources, however, said the visit had been put on hold and the decision communicated to the protesters.

Sources said the party’s central leadership felt that Achutanandan’s visit could stoke the anti-Kudankulam fire and even be seen as irresponsible.
