Athlete’s appeal

Suspended Odia athlete Jauna Murmu, who had tested positive in usage of banned drugs last year during a doping test, appealed to the National Anti Doping Appeal Panel recently to relax her suspension term of one year. The suspension had led to Jauna’s missing the Olympic qualifying camps.

Jobs scored

The East Coast Railway provided jobs to most women footballers of the state hailing from tribal and economically backward backgrounds. The authorities announced the jobs for the players from the Odisha women’s team on Monday. “The women football players who have brought laurels to our state by making it to number one in our country are basically from poor and tribal backgrounds. Now that they have got employment with the East Coast Railway, their performance will improve further,” said Sanjay Behera, secretary, Football Association of Odisha.

All on board

Young chess talents of the state gave each other a tough competition at the state senior chess title recently. The championship began on April 3 at Kalyan Mandap, Nalco Township (Angul). In the final of the 10-round championship, FIDE master Soumya Ranjan Mishra emerged victorious against Puri girl Aparajita Gochhikar to clinch the 52nd Odisha State Senior Fide Rating Chess Championship title. Mishra had tied with Mohammad Ashraf of Cuttack for the top position, both having 8.5 points each. But Mishra emerged winner through the Buchholz tiebreak score. Top seed women grandmaster Padmini Rout managed to hold on to the third position. The top four players of the championship will represent the state in the National Challenger Championship to be held at Tirupati from May 18 to 28.

On-court action

The Puri District Tennis Association is hosting the All-India Tennis Association (AITA) — Odisha Tennis Association (OTA) U-16 Talent Series. The series that began on Monday will conclude on April 12. Players from eight states are participating in the series for the titles in both singles and double categories. Assam boy Ankeet Kashyap and Bengal girl Sweta Sen are the top seeds of the tournament. There are 17 Odia players in the series.

The Kalahandi Cup senior inter-district one-day cricket tournament has been organised by the Odisha Cricket Association. The matches are being played at different venues in Cuttack. The eight different groups, with four teams each, are battling it out in the league phase, which will be on till April 18. On Monday, Mayurbhanj won against Phulbani by 75 runs, Bhadrak won the match against Bargarh by 47 runs, Jagatsinghpur won against Sonepur by 36 runs, Jajpur emerged victorious against Boudh by 88 runs. On the other hand, Balasore won by 7 wickets against Malkangiri, while Bhubaneswar-B won against Dhenkanal by 6 wickets. The matches were played on the grounds of Ravenshaw University, SCB Medical Ground, Barabati Stadium, Bidanasi Ground and Nimpur Ground.
