Mood metal

Selena Gomez
What’s working: Wearing all-shine is a tricky affair but this non-Cinderella makes it look simple — and stunning. Selena is brave enough to match her J. Mendel gown with a shiny clutch from Judith Leiber. Look how she adds more shine with her Lorraine Schwartz earrings. The balancing factor? Those loose locks, fresh candy-pink lipstick and dewy skin. Super smoky eyes or a red mouth would have spelt disaster. Well done, Bieb’s girl!
Jiah Khan
What’s working: Jiah Khan, not a regular on our style pages, sizzles in this sari. The net plays a glam game of peekaboo. She’s got minimal accessories and make-up to let the metallic do its magic.
Vanessa Hudgens
What’s working: We’re blown away — not by her kiss but by the silvery bodycon. The High School Musical star knows just how to work this Pleasure Doing Business dress. It’s short, super-fitted and so sexy! And we love the messy hairdo.
Kim Kardashian
What’s not working: There’s nothing wrong with this silk-satin silver Lanvin dress — it’s good ol’ Hollywood glamour. But Kim, oh Kim! She tries so hard to work it that even the vintage tress style falls flat. Some statement jewellery (we are thinking choker) instead of those blah strings might have helped.
Priyanka Chopra
What’s not working: Same ol’, same ol’. Slinky sari + sequin border + strappy blouse = been there, done that. Even the make-up isn’t any different. The maangtika was a cool touch but not chic enough for PC to pull off. Shake it up girl!
Jennifer Lopez
What’s not working:
Is it a night-shirt? Is it a tee? No, it’s a dress! For all the jaw-dropping looks that the On the Floor singer has stepped out in, we are so disappointed with this no-personality Randi Rahm bronze number. It’s shapeless and does nothing to accentuate her killer curves. Tsk Tsk.
Take a cue from Meryl Streep, who’s super stylish at 62! The Devil did not wear Prada at the Oscars, but a Lanvin wrap gown accessorised by a Lanvin mother-of-pearl minaudiere. Wow!

Dev r Nil tell you how to do metal... not like a maniac

1) Think balance. This look isn’t about subtlety but if you want to keep it mild, balance with nude colours and let the shimmer shine through. Wear one metallic piece at a time — blouse/pants/Patialas…

2) Think layers. If you don’t want to shine much, layer up. Sheer is a big trend for spring-summer 2012, so throw on a cool chiffon shrug or a light jacket and let the metallic colours peek through. It looks great without screaming OTT.

3) Think accessories. If bling on your clothes is not in your comfort zone, let it sparkle on your hands, wrist or feet. A beautiful tangerine or coral dress will work well with a heavy metal choker or a cuff or a trendy pair of metallic pumps.

4) Think make-up. Metallic make-up is also just as uber-cool! But think metal and not glitter. Shimmer on your cheeks, metallic shadows on your eyes or shiny eyeliners are fun. But steer clear of the mouth. A strong red matte is all you need.
