Jewel, Hojai bail extended

Guwahati, April 9: Gauhati High Court today extended the interim bail period of DHD (J) chairman Jewel Gorlosa and commander-in-chief Niranjan Hojai by more than three months.

The DHD (J) leader’s counsel Bijon Kumar Mahajan said a division bench of Chief Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Chitta Ranjan Sarma extended their interim bail till July 17 this year.

The duo’s interim bail was to expire today.

Mahajan and senior advocate Niloy Dutta moved the petition seeking extension of interim bail period of Gorlosa and Hojai in the high court today.

The DHD (J) leaders were initially granted interim bail for four months by the high court on August 12, 2011, in two National Investigation Agency (NIA) cases (1/2009 and 2/2009) registered against them after the investigation agency and Assam government submitted in the court that they had no objection if the duo were granted interim bail.

After that the interim bail period was extended twice for two months each. Last time their interim bail was extended was in February this year.

An official source said the state government had submitted in the high court that it would have no objection in the interim bail granted to the duo was made “absolute”.

“However, the bail could not be made absolute because the NIA has not filed a no objection in this regard,” the said.

According to him, the NIA is not in favour of granting absolute bail to the two top DHD (J) leaders.
