‘Prank’ killed boy

Chinsurah, April 9: A 24-year-old youth arrested for the alleged murder of a Class X student in Hooghly on Saturday has told police that the boy died “accidentally when he played a prank on him”.

According to Priyotosh Pal’s statement, Saikat Mondal had asked him for a lift on his way home from the coaching centre.

Priyotosh, who works at an optometrist’s shop, carried Saikat on his bycycle but had stopped to relieve himself at an abandoned building.

Saikat was standing on the stairs to the entrance, about 4ft high, a police officer said. “Priyotosh, in a bid to scare him, shouted from behind and gave him a push. The boy fell and hit his head on a rock,” he added. After Saikat stopped breathing, a “nervous” Priyotosh made the ransom call, confused what to do, his statement said.

The police traced the number and arrested him.
