Villagers kill leopard for its meat

Jorhat, April 7: A leopard was killed and its meat distributed among villagers at Bahiguri No. 1 Borikhowa village under Dergaon police station in Golaghat district this afternoon.

The incident took place in the presence of forest staff who were outnumbered by the villagers. Forest department sources said a villager, Mulai Pegu, was attacked by the female leopard in the wee hours today when he had gone out of his house. Several villagers who were fishing in the area rushed to the site after Mulai screamed for help.“The leopard then took shelter on top of a tall tree. Hundreds of villagers gathered in the area and brought down the leopard by pushing it with long bamboo poles and killed it,” a forest official who had gone to the incident site said.

He said another villager, Sulai Tait, was also injured when the leopard fell on him in its attempt to flee. The forest official said they could not prevent the incident since there were hundreds of armed villagers. “A few villagers tried to snatch our guns when we stopped them from killing the leopard,” the forest official said.
