Jawan hit in train

Burdwan, April 6:An Assam Rifles jawan lost his left leg and received head injuries after he jumped off a moving train fearing for his life following an attack by another group of security personnel.

Anand Singh protested when seven persons were forcibly taking over seats reserved for others on the Guwahati-bound Kamrup Express. Then they hit him. Singh could not confirm the force the attackers belonged to.

Singh was found unconscious beside the tracks near Dhatrigram station on the Bandel-Katwa section of Eastern Railway. The residents alerted the station manager, who got him admitted to the Kalna sub-divisional hospital.

Ex-MLA wife

Durgapur: The wife of a former CPM MLA was arrested in Raniganj on Friday on charges of smuggling scrap iron from an Eastern Coalfields Limited stockyard. Lakshmi, the wife of leader Haradhan Jha, was caught by Trinamul workers when she was selling the iron.

Three die

Calcutta: Three persons, including a Class VIII girl, were killed in separate incidents in South 24-Parganas after they were struck by lightning during a thunderstorm on Friday.

Cook raped

Murshidabad: A 28-year-old woman, who worked with a caterer group, was allegedly raped by at least four youths near Behrampore on Thursday when she was returning home from work.

Calcutta: A 27-year-old boy riding a bike was killed on Friday when a matador van hit him in South 24-Parganas.

Suicide

Behrampore: A madarsa teacher committed suicide in Behrampore allegedly after police didn’t take any action against the person who slapped her brother.
