Two dead in mishap
Sambalpur: Two persons died and four were seriously injured in a head-on collision between an ambulance and a truck at Betagarh near Rairakhol on Thursday. The deceased were identified as Radheshyam Didwania of Jharsuguda and Hemant Pradhan of Badamba. Pradhan was also the driver of the ambulance. Sources said Didwania was being moved to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar for treatment when the accident occurred. The truck operator managed to flee from the spot.
Student dead
Sambalpur: Tension erupted on the campus of a private engineering college after the body of an engineering student was recovered from Sasan canal in Sambalpur. The deceased, identified as Keshab Kumar Mishra of Champaran district in Bihar, was a first-year student of Silicon Engineering College at Sason. The students resorted to dharna demanding compensation for the deceased. Sources said Keshab had gone to Sason canal to take a bath Wednesday evening and did not return. The college authorities have also lodged a missing case at the Sason police station on Wednesday night
Violence
Balasore: Tension erupted at the Emami Paper Mills in Balgopalpur near Balasore following a clash between workers and management on Thursday. Two top employees of the company sustained head injuries. The incident took place when one of the workers was given physical punishment and the workers opposed the move. However, the workers stalled the production following tools down agitation. A platoon of police has been deployed at the site.
Hoax call
Berhampur: Panic gripped the city bus stand at Berhampur after an anonymous caller said a bomb had been planted in a private passenger bus. Later, the call was found to be a hoax. The caller had said the bomb would explode at 7.30 pm. Police rushed to the spot with a bomb disposal squad and the shops were asked to shut down. The bomb disposal squad found a salt packet, a broken table clock and a used battery of a motorcycle from the site.
Murder
Cuttack: A person was hacked to death by goons at Gadadharpur in Tigiria block over an alleged family feud on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Pradip Rout, 35. The incident occurred around 10am when Rout was on his way to a temple on his bicycle. Around seven to eight goons attacked him with swords and other sharp weapons. A case has been registered and three persons have been detained.
Arrest
Cuttack: Police on Thursday arrested Raju Sarkar in connection with the murder of a youth near Malgodown on March 25. Satyabrata Das, 30, was stabbed to death. Police sources said that Sarkar was annoyed with Das for refusing to return a loan of Rs 800. In a fit of rage, he murdered Das, the police added.
Sarkar was nabbed from Calcutta and he was today produced before the local court.
