Kolhan University: New innings
|
Kolhan University is padding up for some serious on-field action.
The new varsity on the block will host men’s and women’s cricket tournaments for the first time as part of Chancellor’s Trophy, an inter-university sports meet that is being held in the state for the second time after a decade.
The cricket matches will be played at Chaibasa’s Birsa Munda Stadium from April 7 to 10.
Chancellor’s Trophy was held last in 2001 just after the state was formed with then three existing universities — Ranchi University (RU), Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) and Sidho-Kanhu Murmu University (SKMU) — taking part. This time, along with the three, the two new universities — Kolhan University and Nilamber Pitamber University in Daltonganj — will also participate.
“We are trying our best to host the cricket matches as part of Chancellor’s Trophy. This is one opportunity through which we can make sports a popular and regular feature at our constituent colleges. As the university is bullish about introducing sports clubs in the colleges, this will be a great start. Governor Syed Ahmed will be here in Chaibasa on April 9, which will further motivate the students,” said Salil Kumar Roy, vice chancellor of Kolhan University.
Besides cricket, hockey, football and volleyball matches both for girls and boys will be played under Chancellor’s Trophy. While RU, which has already conducted women’s volleyball and football in March, will also host men’s and women’s hockey, VBU will organise men’s volleyball and SKMU men’s football. However, the dates for hockey, men’s football and volleyball are yet to be decided.
Kolhan University, on its part, has already selected the best players from all constituent and affiliated colleges to form its cricket team. The selection trials were held in Chaibasa last month.
“We are trying to put forth a good show. We will leave no stone unturned to impress the chancellor and at the same time ensure that university officials and students have a great time,” said S.S. Akhtar, deputy registrar and spokesperson of Kolhan University.
The university has decided to promote cricket, football and archery in colleges of Jamshedpur, Chaibasa and Seraikela, respectively, by setting up centres.
