APCC election

Guwahati, Feb. 27: Nearly 45 candidates who contested the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress elections will move court, alleging that the poll was conducted in an unfair and corrupt manner. Debo Chetia, a contestant, told reporters today that Kunal Banerjee, the Pradesh returning officer, refused to entertain any complaints of unfair practice.

Arrested

Dibrugarh: Police arrested Raju Ali, 32, of Joypur under Naharkatia police station on Monday for allegedly setting his wife Boby Begum Dowri, 27, on fire on Sunday night. Boby succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital.

Sit-in

Sivasagar: Activists of the Brihatar Asomiya Yuba Mancha on Monday staged a sit-in in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here, demanding use of Assamese in all official correspondences of government departments and by business establishments.

Man run over

Mangaldoi: A Guwahati-bound bus ran over a schoolteacher, Uttam Kalita, on National Highway 52 at Salmara in Kamrup district on Monday. An angry mob set the bus on fire.
