Fake-killing panel

New Delhi, Feb. 27 (PTI): The Supreme Court today suggested the name of a former apex court judge to be chairperson of a panel monitoring the probes into 15 encounter killings in Gujarat between 2003 and 2006.

On February 24, the apex court had rapped the Gujarat government for unilaterally changing the head of the panel. The Gujarat government appointed former Bombay High Court Chief Justice K.R. Vyas in place of former apex court judge M.B. Shah.

Today, the apex court bench, while suggesting the replacement, also said the media must not release the judge’s name as no formal order has been issued nor has any consensus been reached. It was on the top court’s orders that Gujarat had in 2011 set up the panel, headed by Shah.

On February 23, the state government notified Shah had been replaced by Vyas. It justified the move by saying Shah had been reluctant to continue for several reasons, including ill health.
