Calcutta, Feb. 27: The Infosys management will meet industries minister Partha Chatterjee on Wednesday, the move coming in the wake of the governments objection to SEZ status for the companys Rajarhat project but offer of lasting benefits.
We have a meeting with Partha Chatterjee, Bengal IT minister, scheduled for this week. We will make a decision after this meeting, Binod Hampapur Rangadore, senior vice-president and global head (commercial and corporate relations) of Infosys said in an email.
Hampapur is expected to attend the meeting. He had earlier said that according to rules, we need to be get SEZ status to claim all the benefits.
During a recent visit to Calcutta, N.R. Narayana Murthy, the chairman emeritus of Infosys, had said the company was waiting for the state government to fulfil certain conditions, hinting at the SEZ status.
Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan told The Telegraph: We are holding discussions with the government and will see how this can be resolved. If we do not get the SEZ status, the project in Calcutta will become financially unviable for us.
The Trinamul-led government is against special economic zones as it feels that it is a means to grab land and bypass labour laws that protect the rights of employees.
On February 12, Infosys had written to Hidco mentioning that it had applied for the SEZ status from the Centre and needed the states support to secure clearance.
