Pension sop in transport

Calcutta, Feb. 25: The Mamata Banerjee government has decided to provide pension to transport workers in the unorganised sector.

Over 12 lakh workers will benefit from the scheme, the chief minister said at a labour department programme at Salt Lake Stadium.

“Drivers and other workers associated with buses, taxis, luxury taxis, commercial vehicles, vans, auto-rickshaws, lorries and trucks will get the benefit,” Mamata said.

The transport workers will get Rs 1,000 every month as pension. The next of kin of a worker will get Rs 500 each month after his death.

The government has also decided to hike funds under other grants and schemes for the workers.

The amount of compensation to the family of a construction worker dying in an accident has been doubled to Rs 2 lakh. The compensation for the family of a deceased transport worker has been raised to Rs 1.5 lakh.
