Odisha & Tripura desperate to win

Calcutta: Inexperience has let Odisha and Tripura down in the zonal leg matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy so far. The youngsters failed to hold onto their nerves in crucial moments and thus slipped away the matches.

Now, with two more games to play, both the sides are desperate for wins to survive in the competition. Hence, much will be at stake when they take on each other at the Jadavpur University Salt Lake campus ground, on Friday.

Debashish Mohanty, Odisha’s coach, felt that his boys have to do the basics right if they want to win any matches at this level. “See, a coach can only give advice… Ultimately, the players have to execute the plans and perform on the field. We faltered in both our matches since we could not do the basics right on the field,” Mohanty said.

About their opponents, Mohanty said that Tripura would be a tough side to beat. “Tripura were just inches away from creating an upset as they came close to defeating defending champions Jharkhand... Such close matches can either demoralise you or make you realise your abilities. So we have to back ourselves,” said Mohanty.

Odisha will bank on the form of their under-22 captain Govind Podder, who hit a century against Assam the other day.
