Steel city takes flight to capital

How long does it take to travel between Ranchi and Jamshedpur? Three hours? Wrong. The answer is 20 minutes flat.

Bangalore-based DTDS Travel and Tour Planner on Thursday announced launch of flight services between the capital and the steel city from March 2, with a bouquet of special offers throughout the Holi week.

The development comes close on the heels of flight services resuming between Jamshedpur and Calcutta and Jamshedpur and Patna.

Executive sales (corporate) of DTDS Travel and Tour Planner R. Roopak Rao said for the six-day-a-week (barring Sundays) flight they would use a Cessna Caravan nine-seater plane hired from Spirit Air.

“The fare per person from Jamshedpur to Ranchi will be Rs 2,889 (including all taxes). But for the festival of colours, we have decided on a special introductory offer till March 8. This slashed fare per person will be Rs 2,389,” he said.

The flight, promising a travel time of just 20 minutes, will leave Jamshedpur at 11.30am and reach Ranchi at 11.55am. It will depart from the capital at 3.30pm and touch down in the steel city at 3.55pm.

“The flight timings have been arranged on the basis of a market survey in association with several tour and travel planners based in Jamshedpur and Ranchi. Now, people wanting to travel from Jamshedpur to Mumbai and Delhi can arrive at Birsa Munda Airport before noon and take connecting flights to their respective destinations,” the DTDS official said.

As part of their new policy of wooing customers, DTDS has also decided to give special Holi offers on its Jamshedpur-Calcutta route too. The fare has been slashed from Rs 5,622 to Rs 3,122 from March 2 to March 8. The fare of the Jamshedpur-Patna service has also been reduced to Rs 5,300 from Rs 6,269 for the same period.

“Taking into consideration demands of passengers, we have decided to revise the flight timings from Jamshedpur to Calcutta. The plane will depart from Jamshedpur at 4.30pm and arrive in Calcutta at 5.20pm from Monday to Saturday,” said the DTDS sales executive.

The operator has a nine-seater service from Jamshedpur to Patna two days a week — on Mondays and Fridays.

On February 21, Calcutta-based airline Northeast Shuttles had begun its services between Jamshedpur and Calcutta on an 18-seater Dornier 228. The fare is Rs 3,250 per person.
