First-class status for AMRI five

The Alipore chief judicial magistrate, C.H. Karim, on Wednesday issued an order allowing AMRI director Pronab Dasgupta and four hospital officials to be treated as first-class prisoners.

The order, under the West Bengal Correctional Services Act, implies that the five prisoners, who had been sleeping on the floor of their prison cells, will now be able to sleep on beds with mattresses and pillows. They will also be allowed to use mosquito nets.

They have also been granted a table and a chair with a reading lamp, mirrors, combs, two blankets, a steel plate and a glass for drinking water.

Director Dasgupta, senior vice-president Satyabrata Upadhyay, general manager (maintenance) Sanjib Pal and night administrator Sajid Hossain are in Alipore central jail; and vice-president (administration) Preeta Banerjee is in Alipore women’s correctional home.

Their lawyer, Sheikh Salim Rahman, had filed the petition seeking first-class prisoner status on February 9.
