Agartala, Feb. 21: Tripura today celebrated International Mother Language Day with three cultural programmes held on no-man’s land at Akhaura checkpost near Agartala, Srimantapur checkpost in Sonamura subdivision and Muhuripur checkpost in South Tripura’s Belonia subdivision.
The programme at Akhaura began this morning with a procession of poets, artistes and litterateurs from Birchandra central library travelling through the town before reaching the no-man’s land at Akhaura checkpost.
The programme at Akhaura was presided over by Tripura information minister Anil Sarkar while from Bangladesh two Awami League MPs, Shah Alam and Shabir Ahmed, attended it.
Artistes from both Tripura and Bangladesh participated in the programme.
Cultural events were also organised at Srimantapur in Sonamura subdivision and Muhuripur in Belonia subdivision.
Another programme was held Nazrul Kala Kshetra auditorium at Agartala this evening.
Speaking at the event, chief minister Manik Sarkar called upon writers and authors to devote more time for the development of their languages.
“In the age of globalisation there is a craze to learn English and mother tongues are being neglected. A number of languages in the world is becoming extinct. This will not augur well for development of language and culture because even to learn good English one must have a command over one’s mother tongue,” the chief minister said.
Three poets, Kalyanbrata Chakraborty of Tripura, Anurupa Biswas of Assam and Nurul Huda of Bangladesh were conferred award by the Birchandra central library authority during the programme.
