The Alipore court on Monday rejected the bail pleas of AMRI vice-president (administration) Preeta Banerjee and night administrator Sajid Hossain, extending their judicial custody by 14 days.
The lawyer for the two employees cited the case of director R.S. Agarwal, who was granted bail on February 17.
State counsel Shakti Bhattacharya, however, opposed the plea, saying: “Sajid knew about the fire but did not call the fire brigade. Banerjee was also informed about the fire but she did not call police.”
The court of chief judicial magistrate C.H. Karim also allowed doctor-director Pronab Dasgupta’s hearing to remain pending till February 27 since Dasgupta had also applied for bail in the district sessions court, where his petition will be heard on Thursday.
Dasgupta, lodged in Alipore Central jail along with six other directors and three officials, moved the judges’ court for the first time after being denied bail by the chief judicial magistrate’s court twice.
Another AMRI director, D.N. Agarwal, was refused special treatment at SSKM or Alipore jail hospital after the court went through his medical report compiled by the Alipore Central jail superintendent.
His lawyers had sought bail for him on health grounds last Thursday.
“His report states that he is suffering from high blood pressure, hypertension, diarrhoea and diabetes. During his stay in jail, he has suffered from a syncopal attack or brief loss of consciousness and had to be taken to SSKM last week. If he is not treated, his diseases may lead to brain death in near future. But his current condition is stable,” said advocate Ashoke Mukherjee.
The court said Agarwal did not need special treatment.
