Assam to meet Tripura in opener

Guwahati, Feb. 19: Assam will open its campaign against Tripura in the East Zone Vijay Hazare Trophy one-day cricket tournament at Jadavpur University ground in Calcutta tomorrow.

In the squad named on Friday, the Assam Cricket Association fell back on veteran Bitop Mahanta to reinforce the spin attack along with skipper Gokul Sharma and rookie Deepak Gohain. Mumbai Indians recruit R. Sathish is also back in good health. Sujoy Tarafdar, Pritam Das, Arup Das and vice-captain Dhiraj Goswami are the other pacers in the squad.

Assam will next play Orissa on February 22, Jharkhand on February 26 and Bengal on February 29. The knockouts are scheduled from March 5 with the final on March 12.

The squad: Gokul Sarma (capt.), Dhiraj Goswami (vc), Rajdeep Das (wk), Wasiqur Rahman, Dheeraj Jadhav, Abhijit Singha Roy, Pallab Das, Sibsankar Roy, R. Sathish, Tarjinder Singh, Sujay Tarafdar, Pritam Das, Deepak Gohain, Bitop Mahanta, Arup Das. Manager: Pradip Hazarika, Coach: Rajesh Kamath, Physio: Prasenjit Bhattacherjee, Trainer: Nishant Thakur.
