Change agents’ tips for IIM students

What does a policeman-turned-politician have in common with a swami? Or a mountaineer with a musician?

Nothing, except that they have all acted as “catalysts for change” in some point of their lives and were invited by Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ranchi, to share their experiences with the students on Sunday.

The occasion was a conference hosted by the newly opened B-school in association with Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED), a non-profit organisation. The speakers included former Jamshedpur SP and now MP Ajoy Kumar, mountaineer Premlata Agarwal, general secretary of Yogoda Satsang Society of India Swami Smaranananda, organic architecture Mahesh Naik, musician Aishwarya Natarajan, businessman N.K. Choudhary and footballer Franz Gastler among others.

While Swami Smaranananda dwelled on the potential of an individual, Natrajan described how classical music had evolved over the years to appeal to modern day audience. MP Ajoy Kumar, on the other hand, spoke about his foray into politics and Premlata explained how passion and patience could help one emerge as winner.

“Anxiety is a common problem in all, young and old alike. Yoga and meditation can help an individual overcome this problem and realise his potential,” said Swami Smaranananda while delivering a talk on how to remain calmly active and actively calm.

Ajoy Kumar, on the other hand, called his entry into politics something unusual. “I did not have the kind of background generally associated with politicians — money, connections and the like. All that I had is goodwill of the people of Jamshedpur, where I had worked as SP,” he said.
