32 injured in mishaps

Thirty-two CPM supporters were injured in two accidents on their way back from the Brigade rally on Sunday. Twelve of them were injured when a bus from Jamalpur in Burdwan to Esplanade rammed into another on Kona Expressway around 11am. Five had to be admitted to hospital. Twenty supporters were injured when a Minidor was hit from behind by a truck on NH6 near Tenpur around 6pm. Two were admitted to hospital.

Godown fire

A fire broke out in a godown stacked with cotton thread, elastic and other inflammable material on the ground floor of a five storey office-cum-factory building at the Tangra Industrial Estate around 8.30pm on Sunday. Twenty fire tenders took nearly three hours to bring the fire under control. No one was injured.

Youth held

Tausif Rehman, 24, of Jolapara Masjid Lane in Tikiapara area was arrested on Saturday night on the basis of a woman’s complaint that he was maligning her teenaged daughter’s reputation on Facebook. The complaint had been lodged last September.

Truck seized

A truck loaded with sandalwood worth several lakh rupees was intercepted by police on Saturday night while it was travelling down Belghoria Expressway towards Dakshineswar. The truck driver fled.

Murder arrest

Trader Zahir Abbas was arrested from a Naihati godown on Saturday night for allegedly murdering two guards and looting fish feed from a factory in Contai on Thursday.
