Shillong, Feb. 18: The Myntdu Leshka hydel power project in Jaintia Hills will be inaugurated on February 29 by chief minister Mukul Sangma.
Only the first unit of the Rs 1,173 crore project will be inaugurated.
In October 2009, as many as 12 workers were killed because of flash floods in the Leshka tunnel. Equipment was also damaged.
An inquiry was ordered by the government and the matter was referred to IIT Guwahati for expert opinion.
There was another flash flood on May 28, 2010, which also resulted in damage to equipment and the probe in this regard was entrusted to the Central Water Commission.
The deadline to complete the project was five years from the laying of the foundation stone on October 25, 2002 by former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. “The government could start work only in 2004 after getting final forest clearance,” power minister A.T. Mondal said today.
