Language workshop in JU

The School of Languages and Linguistics of Jadavpur University has organised a 10-day workshop and training programme on “Natural Language and Speech Processing for Indian Languages” from February 15.

Professor L. Ramamoorthy, director of the Linguistic Data Consortium of the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore, and co-organiser of the programme, addressed the audience on the inaugural day.

He said that India, with her wealth of languages, required technical tools for processing linguistic data as well as trained personnel to store it. The workshop seeks to build such personnel.

The workshop also hopes to address the problem of how we can protect our languages, record them for posterity and enable them to function in the age of the Internet. Sending of text messages in a vernacular script or development of better translation tools on the Internet are being looked at.

The workshop aims to groom trained researchers and workers in natural language processing. It will build awareness on the need to make them Net-friendly and create tools for linguistic analysis of both speech-grammar and script-grammar.
