Dates set for college cluster polls

The students’ union elections at 14 Calcutta University colleges that had been put on hold apprehending violence are likely to be conducted in phases between March 3 and April 21.

The dates were finalised at a meeting between joint police commissioner (headquarters), Jawed Shamim, Calcutta University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das, CU registrar Basab Bhadhuri, CU inspector of colleges Debashis Biswas and principals of the colleges on Thursday.

“We have drawn up a plan to prevent campus violence and law and order problems in colleges during the students’ union elections. We will send our proposals for ensuring peaceful elections to the state higher education department on Friday,” said Das.

The process of conducting the elections will start as soon as the higher education department approves the proposals, added Das.

In all the 14 colleges, the process had started once earlier, before the elections were put on hold in January.

Between November and January, students’ union elections had been held in 22 Calcutta University colleges.

In keeping with a suggestion by the government, the 14 colleges have been divided into different zones. The elections in the colleges in one zone will be held on a single day.

Students’ union elections in other colleges affiliated with the university will also be held in a similar manner.

Shamim said steps were being taken to maintain peace during the filing of nominations.

Since each college follows its own election rules, the principals were also asked to send the rules and regulations of their respective institutions to the university’s inspector of colleges. “The colleges are free to follow their own rules. But the university would intervene and ask an institution to follow its directions in an emergency,” said the official.

The elections will start with Sarsuna College on March 3. The polls at Kishore Bharati Bhagini Nivedita College and Scottish Church College will be held on March 10. Ashutosh College, Bijoygarh Jyotish Roy College and Khudiram Bose Central College will hold polls on March 13.

The elections are scheduled to be held at Netajinagar College for Women, Surendranath College for Women, Herambachandra College, Khidderpore College, Maulana Azad College and Ram Mohan College on April 5. On April 21, the elections will be held at Netajinagar College (Day) and Chittaranjan College.
