Missionary & surgeon passes away

Shillong, Feb. 14: Meghalaya today bid a tearful adieu to its own Mother Teresa— Sister (Dr) Amalia Pereda Ortiz de Zarate — better known as Dr Amelia of the Missionaries of Christ Jesus, a Catholic Church religious order.

The missionary, who had once run the Nazareth Hospital — one of the foremost medical centres in the state — passed away here yesterday morning. She was 85.

People from all walks of life thronged the Nirmali convent in Laitumkhrah where Sister Amalia had been living in retirement. Later, her mortal remains were laid to rest at Laitumkhrah Catholic cemetery. Born on August 31, 1927, to Daniel and Aurora Pereda Ortiz de Zarate in Spain, she joined the Missionaries of Christ Jesus in 1946.

After completing her initial religious and academic education in Spain, she was sent by her superiors to India where she arrived on April 1, 1961. Sister Amalia had degrees in medicine and surgery from the University of Valencia in Spain. She was also one of the pioneering sisters who started Nazareth Hospital in Shillong, where she was the superintendent and surgeon for over a decade.
