IIT road to be repaired

Calcutta, Feb. 14: The public works department has decided to repair and widen the only road leading to IIT Kharagpur on war-footing as part of an image makeover exercise in districts by the new government.

Mamata Banerjee has asked the PWD to “immediately” repair the road following feedbacks from various quarters, including finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, sources said.

The road — that connects NH6 with NH60 before heading to Orissa — has been lying in neglect for over five years. Tomorrow, a team of PWD officers, led by secretary A.R. Bardhan, are expected to meet IIT director Damodar Acharya to discuss the issue.

“We expect to finish the work within the next seven to eight months,” said a PWD official. “The road width would be increased from the existing 3.5 metre to 7 metre so that there are two dedicated lanes for movement. Besides, a flyover would be also built on this road near Kharagpur railway station so that the movement of vehicles is not hindered because of trains,” Bardhan said.

After complaints started pouring in from former students, a detailed proposal was sent to the Centre, which released over Rs 24 crore for the road from the Central Road Fund, a source said. That was a year-and-a-half ago. Since then nothing much had been done on this stretch.
