Month-long cricket

What: Royal Stag presents The Telegraph Cup Cricket 2012 at CC&FC.

When: February 14 to March 10.

In the past: The corporate cricket tournament that goes back over 20 years was started to give executives who love the game a chance to show off their talent and bond over bat and ball. Over the years the format of the tourney has changed some, but the passion remains just as intense.

The tournament this year: Sixty-four teams have signed up this year, including last year’s winners HSBC and runners-up IMRB. Other favourites include IBM, ITC, Tata Steel, Vodafone and Airtel. The six-a-side tournament will be played in the five-overs-per-innings format.

The 64 teams will be divided into 16 groups for the league matches. Each team will play at least three matches in the league stage. The first two teams in each group will qualify for the Main Plate. The team that ranks third in each group will qualify for the Losers’ Plate and the teams that come fourth will qualify for the Bowl.

Beyond the pitch: Cricket may be the motivation and main attraction, but there’s more in store. The games ensure a packed audience and the club has planned music and entertainment over the weekends so that the corporates and their guests can let their hair down and have a good time.

Club speak: “Ours is a sporting club and this is an important event in the club calendar. Families, friends and colleagues turn up in numbers to cheer the players,” said club CEO Deepankar Nandi.
