Bid to stop taxi refusal

Calcutta, Feb. 11: Transport minister Madan Mitra today said he would take up the issue of taxi refusal with the taxi unions.

“I will discuss the issue with the unions on February 18. I will urge them to ensure that taxis stop refusing passengers. Taxi drivers should also stop forcing passengers to get off midway,” he said.

A union spokesperson said “if fares are not hiked, it will be tough to stop taxi refusal because drivers don’t want to go to places from where they hardly get passengers while returning”.

The government will urge the unions to paint taxis in blue and white in keeping with Mamata Banerjee’s “dream of converting Calcutta into a sky city”.
