Disaster zone

Doranda harbours a killer stretch. About a kilometre from the spot where two school students died on Friday after their motorbike skidded, are two dangerous crossings, barely 25 metre from each other on Main Road-Hinoo link. The first, where Kadru Road meets the Main Road near the fisheries directorate, and the second, where Kadru Road again joins the Main Road towards Hinoo. A triangular island separates the crossings. Two-way traffic, no speed-breakers and no policemen have turned the two crossings into a motorists’ nightmare, reports A.S.R.P. Mukesh.

Hinoo-bound traffic on Main Road encounters vehicles coming in from Kadru. Therefore, those who want to go to Kadru, have to take a right turn in the face of a stream of cars from the opposite direction. “This point is dangerous as drivers have to negotiate heavy traffic flow,” said Ashok Bhagat, a frequent commuter

Vehicles coming from Hinoo can easily take a left into Kadru Road. But the ride is not smooth for Hinoo-bound vehicles from Kadru. “This is because traffic on the Hinoo-Main Road is heavy. So, if I have to go towards Hinoo from Kadru, I have to carefully manoeuvre speeding two-way traffic from both ends, cross the road, and then swerve left towards Hinoo. This is risky,” explained commuter Sabir Alam

POLICE EXCUSE

SP (traffic) R.K. Prasad admitted the area was accident-prone. But, he cited police records to hide behind the fact that there have been no fatalities in the accidents reported so far. “With below-average resources at our disposal, it is terribly difficult for us to rectify each and every thing,” he said
