Summer made its sultry presence felt in the city on Wednesday much ahead of the formal advent of the season. And that by no means is the last trick the weather god has in store for Calcuttans — winter is set to make a cameo appearance before bidding its final farewell.
Even in the early hours of Wednesday, the minimum temperature did not dip below 17.9 degrees Celsius. As the day wore on, it became even more humid. “The maximum temperature was 31 degrees Celsius, five notches above normal, and the relative humidity peaked at 98 per cent,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department, Calcutta.
“It felt like summer. It seems like winter is finally gone this year after a lot of fluctuations in temperature,” said Oli Banerjee, a techie in a Sector V company. Well, Oli can expect a last twist in the tale in 48 hours. “We are expecting a fall in both the minimum and maximum temperature from Friday. The weather will stay cool for a couple of days before it gets warmer again,” said Gokul Chandra Debnath, the director of IMD, Calcutta.“Calcutta will experience a cold spell again. But this is a transitional phase and with winter on the way out, there will not be any significant chill.”
Weathermen predict the minimum temperature would drop to 16 degrees Celsius, the normal for this time of the year, on Friday before climbing up to 17 degrees Celsius over the weekend as winter bows out.
Thursday, however, is expected to be just as uncomfortable with the maximum temperature likely to touch 31 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature 20 degrees.
