Young cricketer steals show

Promising young batsman Devbrat Das’s fine 106 and skipper Saurabh Tiwary’s 54 helped Jamshedpur beat West Singhbhum by 78 runs at the ongoing senior inter-district cricket tournament for HP Bodhanwala Trophy on Tuesday.

In the other match of the day held at Keenan Stadium, Dhanbad defeated Lohardaga.

Das scored with good pace and got able support from his in-form skipper Tiwary to take Jamshedpur to 271/6 in 50 overs at College grounds. The right-hander, who made 106 off 102 deliveries with 12 hits to the fence, took guard when Jamshedpur were 56 for three. Das and Tiwary stitched a handy 121-run partnership for the fourth wicket with the former knocking the century in 97 balls (11 fours).

Later, Das added 62 runs for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Kamal Gope, who chipped in with 21 (32 balls, 2x4).

Medium-pacer Prakash Seet bagged three wickets for West Singhbhum, which failed to give a good chase, managing 193/9 before time ran out. Barring Chandan Singh, who contributed 60 off 92 balls (5x4), and captain Yajuvendra Krishnatray’s 25 (5x4), other batsmen failed to stay put at the wicket.

Jamshedpur off spinner Bima Rao took two wickets while Rahul Shukla, Jaskaran Singh, Mithun Mukherjee and Vishal Singh managed one each.

Dhanbad, on the other hand, was in control against Lohardaga throughout the match. After dismissing the opponents for 217 in 47.5 overs, Dhanbad attained the target with almost nine overs to spare. Unbeaten knocks of 81 (95 balls, 11x4) by captain Subroto Ghosh and 59 (78 balls, 6x4) by Sikandar Hayat guided the team to victory.

Anish Kumar claimed two wickets for Lohardaga while P Kujur took one.
