A woman was found dead with a rope, possibly used for strangulation, lying next to her and a pet Doberman drugged at the foot of her bed in an apartment near Baranagar police station on Monday evening.
Manju Dey, 52, shared the two-bedroom flat with her brother Pranab Dey. Both siblings had not married.
Police said the main gate of the four-storey Chandrima apartment in Ananta Mondal Lane usually remained open and there was no guard either. “It seems that the dog was drugged and failed to raise an alarm,” said a police officer.
Pranab, in his late 40s, runs a glass sheet business in the neighbourhood. He left the flat around 5.30pm to open the shop, a 10-minute walk from his home, for the evening. On returning around 7.10pm, Pranab found the door to the flat locked. “Thinking that his sister had stepped out, he went back to the shop for a duplicate key,” a police officer said.
Pranab entered the flat around 7.30pm and found Manju lying dead. The two almirahs in the room had been rummaged and the locks broken. “He alerted neighbours and called the police,” said a neighbour.
The police are yet to find out what was stolen. “It seems to be a case of robbery. We are probing whether Manju was killed when she tried to raise the alarm,” said D.N. Goswami, deputy commissioner (detective department), Barrackpore.
