A Class XI student of Delhi Public School committed suicide at his Argora home in Ranchi on Sunday.
Originally from Sitamarhi, science student Rohit Raj (17) used to live in a rented room at Argora Housing Colony and attended school in the capital.
After finding Rohit hanging from the ceiling fan of his room, police recovered a suicide note in an exercise book of the student. “Maa, main tum logon ki kasam kha kar bhi nahi sudhra (Mother, I could not reform despite promising to do so)” was what the teenager had written.
Officer-in-charge of Argora police station R.S. Patel said a case of unnatural death had been registered in this connection and the boy’s parents had been informed in Bihar.
Rohit’s uncle Shanker Dayal Mallick, who works in a private firm and lives in Harmu Housing Colony, said the suicide was discovered when Rohit’s friend knocked on his door in the morning to ask him whether he wanted to go for tuition classes.
“After Devashish Krishna, who stays in a room beside Rohit’s, did not get any reply to his knocking, he became suspicious. He called another friend and the two broke open the door to find Rohit hanging from the ceiling fan. The boys immediately informed the caretaker of the house Vinod Pandey, who called the police,” Mallick said.
He added that Rohit belonged to a prominent family in Sitamarhi and came to Ranchi last year for his studies. “Rohit was the youngest among three siblings. His father K.K. Verma is a magistrate at Sitamarhi civil court, while his elder sister Mitali is a doctor in Muzaffarpur. His older brother owns a mobile phone showroom, while his mother Pushpa is a housewife,” Mallick said.
Meanwhile, the police refused to let anyone enter the room where the teenager killed himself till his parents arrived. The body was sent for post-mortem at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) after 3pm.
Rohit was expected to appear for the Class XI final examination on February 20. Though the suicide note was not clear what the oath to reform was all about, sources close to the boy said it was apparently a relationship with a girl he had promised to end.
