Boxing meet begins on Feb. 17

Guwahati, Feb. 1: The best of eight teams, featuring 80 pugilists, will compete in the 8th All India Federation Cup Women’s Boxing championship at the SAI Centre Indoor Stadium here from February 17 to 19.

Organised by the Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) under Indian Boxing Federation, the meet will see boxers take part in 10 weight categories — 45-48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg and above 81kg.

“Top Indian woman boxers, including M.C. Mary Kom and Y. Sunita Devi will take part in the meet. The teams are Railway Sports Promotion Board, All India Police, Haryana, Manipur, Mizoram, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Assam,” Hemanta Kalita, general secretary of the association, said.

Chief advisor of the association Robin Bordoloi lauded the association for bringing the championship to Assam. “The meet will provide exposure to our women. I feel along with archery, boxing is another discipline where we can do well at the Olympics,” Bordoloi said.

SAI director in-charge (Northeast) Subhash Basumatary included taekwondo as another discipline where the state can do well.

“The associations must target the Rio Olympics in 2016. As far as the London Games are concerned, there is still hope for Shiva Thapa to get a berth,” he said.
