Fireman killed on duty
Balurghat, Jan. 29: A fire officer was killed last night when he slipped into a canal of the Atreyee while trying to put out a blaze in a shop.
The imitation jewellery shop near the bus stand here caught fire around 9pm. Although two fire tenders from Balurghat arrived, they could not control the blaze and a BSF contingent from Patiram was called. The fire was extinguished after four hours. During the operation Manik Saha, 45, tried to get around to the back of the shop. But he allegedly fell into a canal 10ft below while jostling with a mob that had gathered at the spot. Sahaís family members have blamed an inactive police force for his death. Fire officials said the shop had been set ablaze on purpose and an FIR would be filed against the owner.
