The start to 2012 has been crazy for Priyanka Chopra. She hosted the Zee Cine Awards in Macau with Shah Rukh Khan before which she was in Dubai for the promotions of Agneepath. Somewhere in between the publicity rounds in India for the remake, she also found the time to complete the shoot for Kunal Kohlis Teri Meri Kahaani with Shahid Kapoor in Aurangabad. And she also won two awards at the Screen Awards — for 7 Khoon Maaf.
On the eve of Agneepaths release, t2 managed to pin the actress down for an interview where she talked about awards, remakes and what excites her about a film.
What interested you about Kalis character?
In this intense film about revenge and hatred, Kali is the softness and the soul of the film, a representation of hope. When Karan Malhotra narrated the script to me, I was completely blown away and I knew instantly that I wanted to be a part of this amazing film. Also, my character is an addition to this version of Agneepath and I was very excited to have a canvas to create something new and unique in a something that everyone is already familiar with.
Personally, did you identify with Kali?
To some extent, yes I did. No matter what the situation is, Kali makes it lighter. She looks for the positive in everything and she puts the people she loves in front of everything else, going out of her way to make them happy, irrespective of how she is feeling. I think Im a bit like that too!
Hrithik and you have done Krrish and Don 2 (Hrithik had a special appearance) together. What was the experience of shooting Agneepath with him like?
As always, it was a fun, enriching experience. Hrithik is a friend and also a tremendously talented actor. He is someone I have a huge amount of respect for and so working with him was great fun.
When looking to sign a film, most actors say the following four points are important — the length of the role; the impact on the story; the rest of the cast and who the producers are. What order would you put these in?
My order of priority is the script; the story. Then I look at the director, who is the captain of the ship, the person whose vision will bring the film to life. Then the producer is important because he has to be able to support the vision of the director and then I look at everything else.
You have been a part of two remakes (Don and Agneepath). What is your take on the trend?
I think remakes are a great idea. Its an amazing way for the generation of today to get introduced to the classics of yesterday. I am pro remakes more so because there are some, which I am now a part of, which I did not see when I was growing up but now got a chance to experience and also share with my generation.
Congratulations on the Screen awards. Do awards still excite you?
Thank you. Yes, every award I receive has a very special place in my heart. Awards mean a lot to me as they are recognition of your work and winning awards has always been an encouragement for me to do better.
You spent a month in Los Angeles last year to record your album. When do you plan to launch it?
Im hard at work as we speak, in a studio in LA. I am spending time writing and recording for the album. Im hoping to drop a single sometime in the middle of this year, which will then be followed by the launch of the album. Im very excited and looking forward to sharing my music with the world.
You have a very interesting 2012 coming up with Teri Meri Kahaani and Barfee. What can people look forward to with both the films?
Yes, Im very excited about all my films. I kicked off the year with Agneepath followed by Teri Meri Kahaani, Kunal Kohlis next with Shahid Kapoor and then Barfee with Ranbir (Kapoor). I am also currently shooting for Krrish 3 with Hrithik. The most exciting part of these films for me is that each one is very different from the other; the films themselves and also in the characters I play. So the audience can expect a lot of variety from me this year and some very, very interesting characters.
