90 families affected in slum blaze

Fire minister Javed Ahmed Khan on Monday said that 90 families had been affected in Sunday’s fire in a slum off the EM Bypass.

“Close to 300 people have been affected. We have temporarily moved them to a vacant CMDA plot nearby. Many NGOs have come forward to help us provide relief to the families,” said Khan, who is also the local MLA.

The Behala Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee has provided half-litre milk packets and a packet of biscuits to each child from the affected families.

Job racket: Three youths operating a job racket in Howrah’s Golabari were arrested after they met a cop, who had contacted them posing as a candidate, in Nagerbazar on Monday. Sukumar Das, Gurupada Das and Siddharth Shukla reached Nagerbazar in a beacon-fitted car to meet the assistant commissioner (north) of Howrah, Rupesh Kumar. The trio asked Kumar to accompany them to a restaurant, where plainclothesmen arrested them.

Airport arrest: Six Nepalese women sent back from Jeddah, allegedly for not having proper documents, were arrested at Calcutta airport on Monday evening. Nathuni Yadav, Ganga Damani, Yauben Kurben Mia, Chandrakala Viswakarma, Sarita Thapa and Maya Gurung, aged between 25 and 35 years, had flown to Jeddah on Sunday.

Held: Shabir, in his mid-30s, was arrested in Kidderpore on Monday afternoon for allegedly murdering a youth in Rajabagan, on the southern fringes of the city, on Friday. Selim was shot dead following a dispute over a plot. Two other accused are absconding.
