Dhubri, Jan. 21: The residents of College Road in ward number 14 of Dhubri town have protested the presence of a solid substance inside a bottle of saline, which was being administrated to a heart patient last night.
The family members of Namita Ghose, 70, said she had a massive heart attack following which doctors prescribed a saline drip, which was bought from a local drug retail shop.
However, a few minutes later, it was observed that the saline was not passing though the needle.
Some substance had blocked the passage of the saline, the family members alleged.
Subimal Deb Gupta, Ghose’s son-in-law, alleged that when the substance was detected inside the saline, he checked the manufacturing and expiry dates, which were found to be right.
“Mannitol injection (IP) 100ml, 20 per cent, manufactured by Albert David Ltd with the manufacturing date July 2011 while the expiry date was June, 2014. So, it was not the fault of the drug retailer but a manufacturing defect. I am not going to spare the company,” Gupta said.
He said Mannitol is transparent but the saline in the bottle appeared to be whitish with some solid substance inside.
Gupta also said he would move the Dhubri district drug inspector and file a case in the Dhubri District Consumers’ Forum against the manufacturer of the saline.
“It is a life-saving saline administered especially to the heart patients. However, if such pollutants are found inside the bottle, how can the patients be saved?” Gupta asked.
An official of Dhubri district drug inspector’s office said they had not received any complaint on the adulterated saline but if they received the complaint, they would act against the manufacturer.
