Ranchi, Jan. 21: The JVM today decided to begin a door to door campaign from February 10 to 12 for the Hatia bypoll. Other election strategies will be worked out during the party’s central executive body meet in Giridih on January 29.
Party president Babulal Marandi took the decision at a meeting today.
“There are 359 polling booths in Hatia. We will go to each household under every booth. All the party MLAs, MPs and office bearers will actively participate in these campaigns,” said party general secretary Rajeev Ranjan.
Though party sources said Ranchi deputy mayor Ajay Nath Shahdeo will be fielded in Hatia, a formal decision is likely to be taken at the central executive meeting.
The Hatia seat fell vacant in 2010 following the death of Congress MLA Lal Gopal Sharan Nath Shahdeo. However, by-election could not be held within the mandatory six months as a petition challenging Shahdeo’s victory was pending before the high court.
The votes polled in 2009 were recounted a few weeks back on directions of Supreme Court. The recounting revealed that Shahdeo had secured 25 votes more than his rival Ramjilal Sarda of BJP. But, Sarda had again filed his objections in the high court regarding lack of transparency in the recounting.
However, it is expected that the high court will give its verdict soon.
