AMRI order

Calcutta, Jan. 21: An Alipore court today asked the officer probing the AMRI fire to state by February 2 if six of the seven arrested hospital directors had previous criminal cases against them.

The order followed defence lawyer Sk. Salim Rahaman’s plea that the six be treated as category-I prisoners so they get iron beds and better food.

Jairam visit

Calcutta: Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh will be in Bengal on a three-day visit starting January 23. He will meet Mamata Banerjee and visit some districts.

Darjeeling: An assistant manager and a waiter of Darjeeling’s Meghma hotel were found murdered on Saturday.

Calcutta: A man allegedly replaced the gold chain and bangles of a woman with plastic ones under the pretext of wrapping them up. He convinced her it was not safe to wear expensive ornaments on roads.
