Students attacked
Kochi, Jan. 17 (PTI): Two Keralite students enrolled in a Tamil Nadu engineering college were attacked by seniors in a running train on Friday, in an alleged incident of ragging.
The duo were attacked with iron rods after they refused to give their ATM cards, money and mobile phones numbers of some girl students to the seniors. The students were returning home from Salem for Pongal holidays.
GJM threat
Darjeeling: The GJM has said it will wait till March for the implementation of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration and will start a fresh agitation for statehood if the Bengal government failed to meet the deadline.
SFI assault
Siliguri: Ten SFI supporters, six of them girls, were allegedly beaten up by Trinamul and Chhatra Parishad members at a Siliguri College on Tuesday when they were coming out of the campus after collecting nomination forms for the students union election.
Flight shock
Kochi (PTI): Passengers of an Alliance Air flight were shocked to find that their pilot had landed in Kochi though they were informed that the plane had reached its destination, Kozhikode. Air India sources said the Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi-Kozhikode-Agatti flight did not proceed as the crew were likely to cross their flight-duty time limit.
Dubai suicide
Dubai (PTI): An Indian couple in Dubai killed their five-year-old daughter and attempted suicide on Saturday. According to the suicide note, they took the extreme step because of financial problems and debts. While Rijesh hanged himself to death, wife Sreesha who slit her wrist and neck survived.
Sikh mayor
Washington (PTI): A Sikh American, Satyendra Singh Huja, has been unanimously elected as the mayor of Charlottesville, a city in Virginia. Huja, who has been elected for a two-year term, is the only Sikh resident of Charlottesville, which has a population of 43,000 people.
