Guwahati, Jan. 4: Gauhati Town Club (Senior) defeated Santipur Athletic Club by three wickets in a low-scoring quarter-final match of the Ramesh Barooah Trophy invitation cricket tournament at the Judges Field here today.
Put to bat, Santipur were restricted to 83 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs. After opener Manoj Malo was dismissed for nine, Baburam Magar at number three steadied the innings scoring 22. Rajeev Kalita who scored 14 off 15 deliveries supported him.
For GTC, left-arm spinner Sekharjyoti Barman took three wickets for 10 runs in four overs.
In reply, GTC were jolted by early wickets, but managed to go past their target in 19 overs, posting 86 for seven. Reeling at 21 for five, GTC could heave a sigh of relief only after middle order bat Mrigen Talukdar launched a counter-attack.
Mixing aggression with caution, Mrigen bailed out his team with a match-winning 35 off 39 balls, a knock that comprised three sixes and four boundaries. Number eight bat Shimanta Neogi added 10 vital runs to the total and saw his team through to the round of four. For Santipur, Bhaiti Ali picked up three wickets while Abhinash Gogoi bagged two.
Mrigen Talukdar was named Man of the Match.
In the second quarter-final tomorrow, Pace Cricket Club will take on Bud Cricket Club.
