Amarnath’s picture perfect gift

Amarnath

Sydney: Cricket Australia (CA) has presented Mohinder Amarnath with a mounted group photograph of the teams which featured in the 1977-78 Test series.

Captained by Bobby Simpson, who’d come out of retirement because of the Packer business, Australia won 3-2.

Mohinder, a member of that Bishan Singh Bedi-led team, got more than he’d wanted a copy of the photograph. He himself presented CA with a 1947-48 series autographed bat which had been given to his late father, Lala.

“It will be preserved well at the museum in Melbourne... In India, we lack this culture of looking after memorabilia... I wasn’t sure what would happen to the bat once I was no more,” Mohinder told The Telegraph on Saturday.

Mohinder, a member of the senior selection committee, is in Australia for the first two Tests. Also on ‘duty’ is his colleague Narendra Hirwani.
