DID YOU KNOW

That Adolf Hitler — known as the man responsible for the rise of fascism in Europe, World War II and the Holocaust — was very fond of dogs? He owned several of them, but his favourite was a German Shepherd called Blondi.

Blondi was given to Hitler as a gift in 1941. The Nazi general was so fond of her that he kept her by his side always, allowing her to sleep in his bedroom. Hitler’s partner, Eva Braun, however, disliked the animal and is known to have kicked her under the dining table!

Hitler spent many hours training Blondi and would even interrupt meetings with generals to practise her tricks. His officials realised that if Blondi did well, Hitler was in a better mood, and more likely to take their advice. And if she did poorly, he would become sullen and stubborn. In May 1942, Hitler bought another young German Shepherd called Bella — to keep Blondi company.

In January 1945, Hitler moved into a bunker where he spent his final few months. Blondi went there too, and even delivered her last litter there.
