Boy on picnic drowns

Malda, Dec. 25: A 13-year-old boy drowned in a pond on the outskirts of Malda town this afternoon.

Subrata Mondal, a resident of Green Park, had gone on a picnic to Sahapur with his school friends. The boys, all students of The St Xavier’s English Medium Academy, were accompanied by Sekhar Acharya, their English teacher in school. Principal Abhijit Jha said the boys were also privately coached by Acharya. After Acharya went to Malda town to bring their lunch, Subrata went for a swim in the pond and drowned. No complaints have been lodged yet.


Nature camp

Siliguri: North Bengal Explorers’ Club, a Siliguri-based adventure club, has organised a five-day nature study-cum-adventure camp in the Dooars. The camp started at Samsing on Sunday and will continue till December 30.


MK visit

Cooch Behar: Governor M.K. Narayanan will visit Cooch Behar on Monday to attend the closing ceremony of the 150 years celebration of Jenkins School. District police has strengthened security throughout Cooch Behar for his visit.


Culture meet

Jaigaon: Cooch Behar Kalakhetra Organisation has started a three-day conference at Banarhat in the Dooars on Sunday. The members demanded that the state and the Centre should set up two art colleges in north Bengal and in lower Assam. Around 50 participants from all over the state participated in the event.


Girl run over

Islampur: A 17-year-old girl, Sanchita Ghosh, was run over by a truck on NH31 near Milanpally on Sunday. Local people set up a blockade for three hours in protest.
