Poacher held with meat

Alipurduar, Dec.22: Foresters today arrested a suspected poacher and seized 20kg sambar meat and animal skin from his house in Madarihat.

Suraj Oraon was produced in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate here and remanded in 14 days’ jail custody. Rajendra Jakhar, the divisional forest officer (wildlife III), said the arrest had been made on the basis of a tip-off.

On December 18, the foresters had found the dismembered carcass of a sambar in Jaldapara wildlife sanctuary. After that, north range officer of the sanctuary Dipak Bala was transferred. Samples of the flesh and the skin will be sent to the Zoological Survey of India for confirmatory tests, said the foresters.


Accident

Islampur: A 42-year-old man died when his motorbike was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle on NH31 on Thursday. Binoy Biswas, a resident of Suryapur, was on his way to Dalkhola when the accident occurred.


Nature camp

Jaigaon: Nature and Adventure organised an awareness camp on man-animal conflict in Sonali tea garden in Malbazar on Thursday. Sujit Das, who represented the NGO, said the garden dwellers had been asked to refrain from making illicit country liquor at home as it would attract elephants and avoid teasing leopards and their cubs.


Protest

Siliguri: Members of the Greater Siliguri Publishers’ and Book Sellers’ Welfare Association staged a sit-in here on Thursday. They were protesting against the state government’s directive to supply books to students from Class VI to Class VIII through schools.


Body found

Islampur: The body of a 25-year-old milkman was found at Apsara Chowk here on Thursday. Police said Ranbir Yadav’s body had multiple injury marks and he might have been murdered. The local people set up a road blockade for an hour after the body was found.
