Protest over rail project

Dhubri, Dec. 5: The New Moinaguri-Jogighopa BG Railway line Demand Committee today staged a dharna at New Cooch Behar railway station demanding a train on the Assam-Bengal route and expediting work on the new Gouripur-Jogighopa broad gauge.

Joint convener of the committee, Tazmul Haque, while addressing a meeting held on the sidelines of the dharna, alleged that despite assurances by the NR Railway to complete the Golokganj-New Cooch Behar route in past five years, it was not yet complete.

Another joint convener, Chandi Paul, while resenting the delay in completion of the Gouripur-Jogighopa line, alleged that the Rs 400 crore, which was earmarked in this year’s railway budget for this project, had been cut down to Rs 300 crore.

“We are going to New Delhi to meet Union railway minister Dinesh Trivedi on December 8 to apprise him about the slow pace of work on the Gouripur-Jogighopa line,” Paul said.

The dharna was also attended by Cooch Behar MP Nripendra Nath Roy, Rajya Sabha MP Tarani Kanta Roy and Cooch Behar legislator Nagen Roy.
