It was important to start well: Viru

Virender Sehwag, on Tuesday

Cuttack: Virender Sehwag’s side started the one-day International series against the West Indies on a shaky note. India did win the match, but just by one wicket and after many nervous moments.

The stand-in captain, at the post-match media conference, claimed that a “win is a win” and starting the series on a winning note was the most important thing for the team.

The following are excerpts

On India managing to win by just one wicket

A win is a win… It doesn’t matter if it is by one wicket or

ten wickets… It was important for us to start well… We are 1-0 up now and we are happy about it. Rohit (Sharma), (Ravindra) Jadeja and Vinay Kumar played responsibly to give us the victory.

If the Indian batsmen were at fault

Not entirely… Kohli and I got dismissed off two good deliveries. The ball came in sharply… But the others were really soft dismissals. More than one player was out trying to play a cut shot… We have to learn from our mistakes. But I back the batting talent in my side… We have some exciting young players and they are improving match by match.

Whether fielding first was the correct decision

Yes, my decision was right… We were chasing a simple target of 212 runs… You can’t really ask for a better target. It was because of the mistakes committed by the batsmen that the target looked difficult. We lost early wickets and it was very difficult to make a comeback after losing five early wickets. Such collapses on Indian wickets are rare and we hope to do better in the remaining matches.

On Rohit’s innings

He is really improving every match… He is a quality player and played an excellent innings today.

If the dressing room panicked at any point

No… That is the quality of the Indian dressing room for the past couple of years… We don’t panic, whatever is the situation. We stay calm and cool, and keep the belief in ourselves.

On the packed stadium

It feels great to play in front of such a huge crowd at home… It was an excellent game, a great game… Nobody expected the match to be so close and that is why it was a great game for the crowd.

The crowd trouble

That happens in India… When there are so many spectators, such things do happen.

The importance of victory in the first match of the series

Every match is important… We want to become the No.1 once again… The process is on and as long as we follow the correct process, the results will keep coming.

On the team’s performance

I’m happy with our bowling and fielding, but certainly we need to improve our batting. There can be no excuse for the batsmen to not score runs in these conditions.

On the wicket

It was a pretty good track… In fact, I had expected West Indies to make 270-280. That they could put up that kind of a total was because of our good bowling.
