Bullet scare on Patil route
A bag containing two empty cartridges of a 9mm pistol was found abandoned along the Bypass, near the Chingrihata crossing, hours before President Pratibha Patil’s convoy was to pass by on Monday afternoon. The bomb disposal squad was alerted and a sniffer dog sent to the spot. “The dog’s behaviour suggested that there was something suspicious in the bag. Cops opened the bag and found two empty cartridges,” said an officer. The convoys of the chief minister and the governor passed through the adjoining flank while the bag was being searched.
A 50-year-old woman was arrested on Monday evening after her seven-year-old grandson choked to death while she was trying to stop him from crying by placing her palm on his mouth. Police said Subhankar used to live with Namita Sadhukha at her Shyamnagar home in Dum Dum while his parents and elder brother lived in Hariharpara nearby.

A constable was injured after a carbine was misfired during a training session at the Intelligence Branch office on Lord Sinha Road on Monday morning. Police sources said the bullet had hit the constable on one of his legs.

Earlier in the day, an auto with two passengers overturned at the Vidyasagar rotary near Bidhannagar College. The passengers and the driver were injured. They were taken to Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital.
